ABOUT:

The Confrerie du Sabre d’Or first appeared in French History during the reign of Napoleon 1st and his Imperial Guard.

The Imperial Guard began as the Consular Guard, created on November 28, 1799 by the union of the Guard of the Directory and the Grenadiers ofthe Legislature. It was comprised of about a thousand soldiers whose principal purpose was to provide security for the executive and legislative branches of thenew French Republic.

The Consular Guard changed its name to the Imperial Guard on May 18, 1804.Imperial Guards received cases of Champagne from Madame Veuve Clicquot as a gift to give them strength on the battlefield. Imperial Guards would openthese Champagne bottles with their swords.

The Confrerie du Sabre d’Or has promoted the Wine of Champagne and the Art of Sabrage (the act of opening a bottle of Champagne with a sword) around theworld, since more than 30 years. The Confrérie du Sabre d’Or endeavors to establish and encourage the consumption of Champagne. With more than 35,000 members in 44 countries, it is themost important brotherhood celebrating Champagne.

The US Embassy of The Confrerie du Sabre d’Or was created in 2002 by a group of connoisseurs of Champagne, comprised of both American and French citizens. The members, men and women, are called Sabreurs, then Chevaliers-Sabreurs.

The Confrérie du Sabre d’Or is headed in France by the Grand-Maître, Jean-Claude Jalloux, with the Grand Council. There are 25 Ambassadors of InternationalChapters. The American Chapter is led by Mr. Philippe Milgrom, assisted by Mr. Patrick Caraco, Mr. Laurent Caraco and Mr. Benoit Clair.
